While the Florida Keys see heavy tourist traffic practically year-round, there are certain months when the islands see much less visitors. The best times to visit are in the spring and autumn, before the crowds of summer and before the school year begins in the winter.

There are less people about in the late spring than there are during the busy holiday and spring break seasons, and the weather is still bearable. Fall, after hurricane season has ended, is the least crowded time to visit. The Florida Keys are beautiful in the spring and the fall.Keep in mind that the Keys experience a drift hunters hot, humid, and often rainy autumn, in contrast to the cool, breezy, leaf-tinted dreamscape you may be accustomed to from living in the north. Depending on what you want to accomplish on your trip, the optimum time to visit the Florida Keys may vary across the months.

One of the busiest seasons is summer, but beware: temperatures reach their peak then, and storms are always a possibility. Nonetheless, the water is at its hottest and boating season is at its height during these months; the scorching temperatures don't seem to deter the masses.

The winter months, around November through February, have the most pleasant temperatures in the Florida Keys. Although January has the year's coolest average temperature at 65 degrees Fahrenheit, it doesn't mean much in terms of comfort. While the weather in the Keys is mild in the winter, the water temperature is at its lowest, thus a shortie wetsuit may be necessary for scuba diving or snorkelling.

There are few better times to visit the Florida Keys than late spring, when the temperature is comfortable but not too high, hurricane season has not yet begun, the water is still warm, and the summer throngs have not yet landed in full force.

Keep in mind that from June 1st through November 30th, the Atlantic hurricane season poses a risk to any trip to the Keys, with the peak of the season occuring between the months of mid-August and mid-October.
