One of the most common and well-known reasons for skin darkening is sun exposure. Ultraviolet rays from the sun stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanin in order to protect the skin from DNA damage. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause long-term pigmentation and tanning, while UVB rays affect the surface and cause sunburn. Daily sun exposure, even for short periods, accumulates over time. Activities such as commuting, walking outdoors, driving, or sitting near windows expose the skin to UV rays. Without proper sun protection, this repeated exposure leads to tanning, dark spots, and uneven skin tone.
Hormonal changes are another major contributor to skin darkening. Hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and melanocyte-stimulating hormone directly affect melanin production. This is why skin darkening is commonly seen during pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, and while using hormonal contraceptives. A well-known hormonal condition called melasma causes brown or grayish patches on the face, especially on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. Hormonal disorders such as thyroid imbalance and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also lead to increased pigmentation and uneven skin tone.
